Russia launches massive airstrikes on Ukraine this Christmas
Russia launched massive airstrikes on Ukraine's energy sector on Wednesday night, local authorities report. Explosions have been reported across the country as bombardment intensifies, leaving Ukraine in a precarious situation. The war is now entering its third winter.
Attacks on Kharkiv
At least three people were injured in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, less than 20 miles from the Russian border, Ukraine's national police said. Residential buildings and civilian infrastructure were damaged in the attacks. At least seven rocket attacks were carried out on the city, according to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov.
Massive attacks on the energy sector
Ukrainian Energy Minister German Halushchenko said on his Facebook page that Russia had once again attacked the energy sector “on a massive scale.” As a result, the Ukrainian energy operator imposed emergency power outages in several parts of the country.
Reactions from Poland
In view of a possible Russian missile threat in western Ukraine, Poland put fighter jets on alert, the Polish operations command reported.
Previous attacks
Wednesday's attack followed a deadly Russian strike on the town of Kryvyi Rih on Christmas Eve. At least one person was killed and 17 others injured when a Russian missile hit a residential building in the city that is home to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Attack on Kyiv and verbal confrontation
Last Friday, another Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian capital Kiev killed at least one person and damaged several embassies. That attack followed a provocative statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin challenging Ukraine to a "duel," leading Zelensky to call the Russian leader a "fool."
