A breathtaking chase occurred on Tuesday evening, December 10, 2024, on Federal Highway 96 between Sagard and Sassnitz when police spotted a VW vehicle traveling at extreme speed. The vehicle recklessly overtook a van in violation of an overtaking ban and exceeded the maximum permitted speed by an impressive 79 kilometers per hour. The police officers from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania quickly gave chase and increased their speed to almost 180 kilometers per hour in order to catch up with the speeding car Nordkurier reported.
Near a gas station in Sassnitz, officers managed to get the driver to stop. During the subsequent check, it was found that the driver's breath alcohol level was 0.00 per mille. However, there were signs of possible drug use. The police therefore ordered a blood sample to be taken by a doctor. The driver is not allowed to continue driving and now faces serious legal consequences. In addition to the violation of the overtaking ban, reports are also filed on suspicion of illegal car racing and exceeding the tetrahydrocannabinol limit, such as Stralsund police station stated in their press release.
