Rapid escape in Wels: 20-year-old in custody after horror crash!

There was a dramatic incident in Wels that is now occupying the public prosecutor's office. On January 31, a 20-year-old man of Serbian-Hungarian nationality was caught in a nerve-wracking chase after speeding away from police patrols on the B1 at speeds of up to 250 km/h. The chase began when he crossed a barrier that would have forced him to stop. Instead, he fled, ignored red lights and continued dangerous overtaking maneuvers that endangered numerous other road users, such as meinkreis.at reported.

Unfortunately, this risky journey ended in a serious accident at the Traun intersection, where the young man crashed into several stationary cars at over 160 km/h. Both the driver and his passenger, two police officers and another road user were injured, some seriously. The Wels public prosecutor's office assumes there was a conditional intent to kill, as there are at least five dangerous situations with up to 20 vehicles affected, which put the lives of many people in danger, according to public prosecutor's spokesman Christoph Weber. The young man, who did not have a valid driver's license, admitted during his arrest that he did not stop in a panic for fear of not getting his license back, having previously lost his permit in a separate incident. ORF reported.

Arrest warrant triggered

On February 5th, a few days after the terrible incident, the Wels public prosecutor's office issued an arrest warrant against the driver. He was arrested at his home address in Linz after escaping over the balcony, but was ultimately caught by emergency services at 6:09 p.m. The situation was so critical that a large number of police and rescue workers were necessary to secure the scene of the accident and care for those affected. The investigation is still ongoing and it remains to be seen what legal consequences the young man will face.
