On the night of May 26, 2025, there was a large-scale police operation in Vienna-Simmering. Shortly after midnight, the police were alerted to a suspicious activity report that indicated an armed perpetrator with a firearm. Police spokeswoman Julia Schick confirmed the deployment and mobilization of several WEGA sectors.
The operation was carried out due to community concerns and reports of an armed man. When the emergency services arrived on site, the suspect was quickly overpowered. According to Schick, it was a blank pistol that the man was carrying. For example, on December 16, 2021, there was an incident in front of the Westfield Donauzentrum in the 22nd district, where a man shot several times into the air with a blank pistol and then fled. Luckily there were no injuries or damage. The police were called to the shopping center in large numbers and only found bullet casings on site.
The search measures that were then initiated were later scaled back because there was no longer any acute danger. The entire operation caused confusion and excitement among passers-by as the police were equipped with protective suits and helmets.

Another incident occurred on February 25, 2025 in Vienna-Favoriten, where the police were called due to alleged shots fired in a residential complex. On site, the officers found patrols that apparently came from a blank pistol. A verbal argument broke out between two men nearby and seven people complained of respiratory problems, with one person requiring hospitalization. The police are now investigating on suspicion of endangering physical safety.
