New police security center in St. Pölten: construction starts in 2027!
In St. Pölten, the new police security center for Lower Austria is taking concrete shape. With the selection of the architectural team Pfaffenbichler ZT-GmbH and Maurer & Partner ZT GmbH as the best bidder, the planning process is on a solid foundation. As noe.gv.at reports, the evaluation committee's decision was based on several factors, including price, architecture, functionality and sustainability. This decision represented a crucial step in the development process, as the Lower Austrian state government has now officially given the starting signal for the design planning.
The proposed concept envisages a new building as an open campus, which will be connected by internal traffic axes and pedestrian paths. The gross floor area is around 36,000 square meters and the total construction costs are estimated at around 171.2 million euros (as of Q1 2023). Construction work is scheduled to begin in summer 2027, while completion is expected in spring 2030.
Location and public
Another positive aspect is the new location of the center, which will now be located behind the “Kombi-West”. This means an increased distance from residential developments compared to the original plan. Residents were informed about the winning project and further steps at an information event on July 17th.
The project will be implemented by the state of Lower Austria, while the federal government will act as tenant. There is political support for the project; State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) described the project as a sign of protecting the population, while Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) praised it as a “showcase project”.
Modernization as part of the real estate strategy
The new police security center is part of a broader strategy to modernize police departments in Austria. As [5min.at](https://www.5min.at/5202407181443/immobilienstrategie-296-polizeidienststellen- Werden-modernized/) reports, a total of 296 police stations in Austria are being modernized. This modernization program by the Ministry of the Interior covers various facilities such as police stations and security centers, although basic renovation work is also required. The renovation measures include, among other things, painting, replacing sanitary facilities and modernizing floors.
Interestingly, developments in recent years show an increase in new buildings and renovations. Last year, 52 real estate projects were realized, while 34 departments were modernized in 2023. These initiatives are part of the strategy to renew the departments both functionally and visually, with the Minister of the Interior working closely with the landlords of the relevant properties to ensure quality standards.
Overall, the progressiveness of the new police security center in St. Pölten as well as the broader strategy of department modernization indicates a targeted investment in public security that takes into account both the requirements of the police and the needs of the population.
