On August 14, 2025, a serious accident occurred in the Wolfsberg Tunnel at around 11:20 a.m. A 46-year-old German braked in the fast lane for unknown reasons. This resulted in following vehicles not being able to stop in time, which in turn resulted in several impact collisions. Both Austrian and German drivers were involved in the mass crash.
Five people were injured in the accident, including two children. A 38-year-old German car driver was particularly affected, and his two children were also injured. These three injured people were immediately taken to the Villach LKH, while the other injured people were transferred to the Spittal/Drau hospital. The Red Cross was also on duty with three ambulances and an emergency ambulance, as was the Spittal/Drau motorway police, which helped clarify the circumstances of the accident.
The exact circumstances that led to this unfortunate incident are currently unclear. While the police continue their investigation, the cause of the suddenly braking vehicle remains of great interest.
