Lift accident in Tulfes: support cable crashes - 40 skiers in danger!

On Saturday, February 8, 2025, at around 12:50 p.m., a dramatic incident occurred on the “Halsmarter” button lift in the Glungezer ski area in Tulfes, Tyrol. As the Tyrol Police reported that the support cable at the first support tore due to mechanical influence and fell to the ground with a roar. There were around 40 people on the lift at the time of the accident.

A 64-year-old Austrian man was hit by the falling support cable but was fortunately uninjured, although he discovered that his helmet was significantly damaged. This dramatic scene, which took place before the eyes of many witnesses, led to the lift staff's rapid intervention. The approximately 40 passengers were safely brought to the “Halsmarter” middle station on skidoos without anyone being injured. Initial investigations show that shortly before support 1, a lift bracket may have been thrown up and wrapped around the support cable. This chain of unfortunate circumstances led to the destruction of the battery of pulleys on the first support and the fall of the support cable.

Investigations are ongoing

The detailed results of the investigation are still pending, but the investigations so far make clear the seriousness of the incident. So far, it seems unclear how exactly the lift bar triggered the chain of events that led to this potentially fatal accident. The police have already started an investigation to clarify the exact cause of the accident. Information and updates on this will continue to be followed closely and through Press releases published.
