Austria's new triple coalition: saving and hard years ahead!
The negotiation marathon in Austrian domestic politics has an end! On Thursday, after tough 151 days of negotiations, the ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS finally presented their government agreement. The coalition pact entitled "Now do the right thing. For Austria" gives the red, black and pink parties clear goals. In a press conference, the chairman Christian Stocker, Andreas Babler and Beate Meinl-Reisinger proudly announced that their cooperation is entering new territory-for the first time, a triple coalition in Austria rules. According to krone.at , the Austrians will have to deal with strict austerity measures in the next two years: in 2025 there are savings of 6.3 billion euros and in 2026 of 8.7 billion euros on the agenda.
After a long period of uncertainty, in which the SPÖ was stubborn in addition to two failed attempts to government, Babler presented an optimism that cannot be denied: "It is the result of the willingness of all of us to allow the other success." The asylum course will be particularly affected, with a mandatory integration program from the first day and a temporary stop of the family reunification, as well as Neos boss Meinl-Reisinger announced that her party, who is proud of this historical step, has just started to consolidate her place in the government. Another important point is the implementation of a new educational program that integrates a strengthening of democracy and mediation.
If you look at the distribution of department, the SPÖ takes over the areas of living, culture and health, while the NEOS will lead the educational department. For the ÖVP, the ministries are intended to defend the national defense and economy. So the political landscape will change sustainably, and as Meinl-Reisinger aptly emphasized: "We know that we have to deliver." If everything goes according to plan, the new ministers could be praised on March 3. The biggest hurdle remains the coordination of the NEOS members, which is necessary to officially put the coalition pact into force.
