FPÖ on the way to the President of the National Council: New majorities and custom

The discussion about the future National Council President in Austria is picking up speed. After the ÖVP has already signaled its support, the second President of the National Council Doris Bures from the SPÖ is now joining this idea. It emphasizes the importance of compliance with the constitution, the rules of procedure and the unwritten rules of Austrian parliamentarianism.

Bures argues that it is important to grant priority to the strongest parliamentary group in parliament in the occupation of the National Council President. Otherwise, with their majority, the government factions could occupy the three positions of the President, which could lead to an imbalance.

The decision about who the FPÖ will nominate will be made in the corresponding committees in the coming days. Norbert Hofer, the current third president, enjoys broad support for his tenure. Nevertheless, other roles within the party could be assigned to him. Other potential candidates are Volksanwalt Walter Rosenkranz or MP Susanne Fürst.

The rule that the strongest faction provides the National Council President only a custom. The Greens have already announced that they would vote against a candidate from the ranks of the FPÖ. It remains to be seen how the Situation will develop.
