ÖVP dominance: This is how the local council elections in Lower Austria will work in January 2024!
On January 26, 2025, elections for the new municipal council will take place in most Lower Austrian municipalities. The ÖVP stands out with a remarkable presence: it will be represented on the ballot papers in all municipalities. In contrast, the SPÖ is running in 539 municipalities, the Freedom Party in 448, and the Greens and NEOS in 120 and 52 municipalities respectively. With an impressive pool of around 20,000 candidates, Matthias Zauner, the regional manager of the ÖVP, emphasizes the diversity that the party covers and speaks of a representative representation of all social classes.
Electoral procedures and special rules
The municipal council election process is characterized by special voting rules, such as kommunalbrevier.de reported. During the election, each proposal is not voted on individually if there are several candidates to choose from, but rather all proposals are dealt with as part of a single voting process. Secret voting ensures that voters cast their votes anonymously, especially for important positions such as aldermen and mayor. Votes for persons not nominated are invalid and the election must be repeated if no one obtains the required majority of votes.
The election itself is a multi-stage process that can also allow for interruptions or postponements by the local council as long as a final decision has not yet been made. This structural process aims to ensure transparency and clarity during voting.
