Mega logistics center in Auhof: protests stop city project!

The city of Vienna has once again stopped plans for a mega logistics center in Auhof, which was to be built on 50,000 square meters. This step came after massive protests from residents who have been resisting the project for a long time. The Hietzinger FPÖ district party chairman Mag. Georg Heinreichsberger expressed his joy about the stop and described it as a success of the joint protest by citizens and the party. The ignoring of existing local suppliers, the increased traffic load and the associated environmental aspects were particularly criticized. There were also allegations that the city wanted to act behind the backs of the population. The FPÖ is now calling for sustainable projects that create real added value for local residents.

Heinreichsberger proposes a modern sports center for children and young people instead of the logistics center. This idea resonates given the critical voices in the district, particularly given the years-long development of the project, which in retrospect is viewed as having little benefit to the community. The protests against the project are part of broader opposition to similar logistics projects in the region.

Resistance to logistics centers in the area

Similar to Vienna, massive resistance is emerging in Villach against the construction of a logistics center in a nature reserve. The citizens' initiative “Rett ma die Schütt” has been campaigning against the project for 18 years, which aims to upgrade Carinthia as a business location. Critics fear the developments could have a negative impact on wildlife, particularly protected bird species. The city of Villach, in cooperation with Deutsche Logistik Holding (DLH), is moving forward with plans for the “Alplog Nord” logistics center, although the entire area of 18.3 hectares is disputed.

The discussion about such logistics projects and their effects seems to be of great importance not only locally, but also regionally. The various citizens' initiatives and protest actions illustrate the growing unease among the population regarding surface sealing and the associated ecological consequences.
