FPÖ and ÖVP: Economic policy in the fight for small businesses!
In the last few days, economic policy cooperation between the FPÖ and the ÖVP has been vehemently discussed. Thomas Schaden, President of the Social Democratic Business Association (SWV) Lower Austria, sharply criticized the FPÖ for its blockade of important measures for small and medium-sized businesses, such as sick pay for the self-employed from the fourth day. According to Schaden, while the FPÖ presents itself as the party of the common man, it shows that in reality it does not act in the interests of these entrepreneurs, but has repeatedly rejected the SWV's proposals, as reported APA OTS.
At the same time, ÖVP MP Kurt Egger reiterated that for Austria's stronger economy it was necessary to reduce taxes for companies and reduce bureaucratic hurdles. Although both parties have similar objectives in their economic policy, the question remains as to how these ambitious plans will be financed, especially given the tight budget situation. Oliver Picek, chief economist at the union-affiliated Momentum Institute, noted that without comprehensive budget restructuring, many election promises could remain unfulfilled, which has the potential for a “social clear-cutting,” reported Vienna newspaper.
Despite all the differences of opinion, it seems that the FPÖ and the ÖVP essentially pursue a similar economic policy line that focuses on strengthening competitiveness. However, it remains to be seen whether these parties are prepared to find acceptance for their plans among the population through cuts in social benefits.
