A dramatic change in Tyrolean politics is underway: Philip Wohlgemuth, the new regional party leader of the SPÖ, has addressed clear words to the public. “There is currently a clear decision in the party: no cooperation with the FPÖ. In the federal government as well as in the state,” explains the 37-year-old. With the outgoing deputy state governor Georg Dornauer, there is not only a change in leadership, but also an extremely sharp demarcation from the FPÖ. Wohlgemuth makes it clear that he sees no need for changes on this issue and thus takes a clear stance towards the Freedom Party, while he perceives Dornauer's withdrawal as a consequence of strong pressure within the party.
New face at the top
Wohlgemuth emphasizes that Dornauer, who was in the headlines at the beginning of the year for his hunting trip, will remain in the state parliament for a while, but only wants to fulfill his role in the SPÖ on a temporary basis. Wohlgemuth confirms that Dornauer's decision to resign from the two top positions was due to enormous internal pressure: "The feedback about the hunting photo was completely different than in previous discussions," he states. The gap between the party base and leadership became obvious in the discussion about Dornauer.
In the midst of these political upheavals, the question of integrative politics does not remain a side note. Wohlgemuth, who is also described as a pragmatic person, wants to put a clear focus on social issues and speaks out against cuts in social benefits, even if the financial situation is difficult. “The welfare state guides us well through crises,” he explains, signaling the approach that social justice should come first even in times of crisis, while the discussion about the new “Asylum Code” based on the Vorarlberg model remains on the agenda MyDistrict.at reported.
