Wienmobil starts e-bike offer: 300 new bikes for the city!

From July 7, 2025, Wienmobil, the Bikesharing offer of the Viennese lines, will expand its fleet by around 300 e-bikes. This pilot project is part of a test phase that will run by October 2026 and is intended to offer citizens more opportunities for sustainable transportation. The e-bikes will be visible and bookable in the NextBike app and are identified by a characteristic "lightning" symbol. This expansion takes place in addition to the existing 3,000 bicycles in the city, which have been available at more than 250 locations since April 1, 2022. The e-bikes go one step further to promote the bike expansion in the city and to promote the use of bicycles in Vienna. ots.at reports that the rental process only has to be easily downloaded, selecting an e-bike, scanning and skill drive off.

The new e-bikes are specially designed vehicles with silver-gray frames that stand out from the existing white and red Vienna mobile wheels. They can be borrowed from 250 Wienmobil bike stations and can also be returned there. The price for use is 3 euros per 30 minutes, with a maximum daily price of 36 euros. However, these e-bikes are not included in the Wienmobil Rad annual subscription. There is a special offer for regular customers of the Viennese lines and climatic lines: You will receive two free trips of 30 minutes each free of charge. The investment and operating costs are borne by NextBike. Wiener Linien emphasized that the Wienmobil bikes lined up almost a million last year and thus make an important contribution to environmentally friendly mobility.

Environmentally friendly mobility and cycling in Vienna

The promotion of cycling is not only a local, but also a global goal. Experts of the Environmental Federal Agency estimate that up to 30 % of car journeys could be shifted to bicycle traffic in urban areas. This would not only lead to relief for traffic, but would also significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Cycling has already become a central part of urban mobility in many European cities, such as Copenhagen and Amsterdam. In these cities, the cycling share was significantly increased, which also has positive effects on the quality of life of the residents.

The increasing popularity of cycling in Vienna is also reflected in the increasing modal split, which is currently showing that 11 % of the Viennese mobility needs are covered by the bike. Local initiatives such as the Wienmobil e-bike fleet could help increase this number further. In order to further increase the cycling share, continuous wheel nets and modern bicycle parking systems are necessary. A well -developed cycling infrastructure can significantly influence the acceptance of cycling and further promote use.

In summary, it can be said that the new Wienmobil e-bike offer is not only a step towards environmentally friendly mobility, but also strengthens the quality of health and life of the city dwellers. Cycling has been shown to reduce the risk of civilization diseases and improve air quality by reducing pollutants. Through innovative programs and projects like this, Vienna could be on the way to consolidate its position as one of the most bicycle -friendly cities in Europe.
