Wiener election 2025: SPÖ stays in front - FPÖ with strong gains!

On April 27, 2025, the highly expected elections to the Vienna municipal council and state parliament took place. The first projections show an exciting result that will shape the political landscape of Vienna. As reported 5min.at, the extrapolation was based on the counted voting blades and part of the postal votes. To move into the local council, the parties needed at least five percent of the votes.

The preliminary results of the extrapolation according to the ORF are as follows:

  • SPÖ (Social Democratic Party of Austria): 39.3 %
  • FPÖ (Freedom of Austria): 20.5 %
  • Greens (the green alternative): 14.7 %
  • ÖVP (Austrian People's Party): 9.6 %
  • neos (the new Austria and liberal forum): 9.61 %
  • KPÖ and links (Communist Party of Austria and left Vienna): 4.2 %
  • Team HC Strache (Alliance for Austria): 1.1 %
  • other parties (other): 1.1 %

voter participation and citizens entitled to vote

A total of 1,374,712 people were able to vote, but there are some special features in voting rights. Of the 1,109,936 Viennese voters, over a third have no Austrian citizenship and are therefore not allowed to vote. Nevertheless, 264,776 non-Austrian EU citizens are entitled to vote, while in the elections of the 23 district representatives at the same time, a high number of postal voting cards, 284,956, were issued, which are largely counted on the election evening. This can be seen from the information from Kleinezeitung.at.

The turnout was another topic of great interest. As reports [Kurier.at] (https://kurier.at/chronik/wien/wien-wahl-2025-so-hoch-war-- die-elections/403034660), an interactive graphic shows that the turnout in various Viennese districts was different. There, users can see exactly in which areas the citizens have gone to the urn. Darker areas of the card stand for a higher turnout.

forecasts and political strategies

The SPÖ, under the leadership of Mayor Michael Ludwig, was challenged to defend their position, while forecasts by Dominik Nepp (FPÖ) indicated strong gains. Other party leaders such as Karl Mahrer from the ÖVP, Judith Pühringer from the Greens, Selma Arapovic from the Neos and Barbara Urbanic from the KPÖ were also active in the election campaign. The elections to the local council are particularly important because a total of 100 seats have been filled, which will significantly influence political control over the city.

The polling stations closed at 5 p.m., and the projections started from 6.30 p.m., whereby they were based on already counted sprinkle results. The day after the election, one last state of the results is to be expected, which will include all sprinkler results and extrapolated election cards.
