Viennese peak of violence: driver attacked with knife!

On Tuesday evening, May 28, 2025, at around 8:30 p.m., a violent incident occurred on the Währinger Belt in the Alsergrund district of Vienna. A 34-year-old rams a 55-year-old man's car and then attacks with a butterfly knife. The incident began when the 55-year-old is said to have “cut” the 34-year-old several times, which led to the brutal escalation. The attacker scratches the hood of the vehicle and eventually stabs the windshield while the victim calls 911.

When the 55-year-old's vehicle came to a stop across the road, Viennese police officers quickly arrived at the scene. With their service weapons drawn, they asked the 34-year-old to drop the knife. The Syrian citizen complies with the request and is overpowered and arrested by the officers. The knife is secured. During his interrogation, the 34-year-old partially confessed and stated that he had acted out of anger. He has been issued with a provisional weapons ban and remains in police custody.

The police are continuing to look for more witnesses, especially to gather more information about the woman described, who is around 20 to 30 years old and around 1.70 meters tall. At the time of the crime she was wearing a light jacket and dark trousers. Relevant information can be submitted anonymously to the Vienna State Criminal Police Office.

Crisis of violence and crime statistics

These incidents highlight current violent crime in Vienna. Police crime statistics (PKS) record developments in criminal activity and provide a basis for the strategic planning of criminal police measures. Since 2001, all reported cases have been registered electronically, but unreported cases and the outcome of the court proceedings are not recorded. The PKS not only serves to combat crime reactively but also preventively. Factors influencing the numbers are the reporting behavior of the population and the intensity of police controls.

In view of these developments, it is extremely important that the authorities, politicians and society work together on strategies to improve the violent situation in Vienna. Annual security reports are prepared to provide detailed information on the PCS and criminal investigation developments, which are published by ministerial bodies.
