Viennese discovery: 200-year-old flute machine plays bustle classic!

A spectacular find from Vienna's music history inspires the experts! In the Schottenstift, a completely unknown roller was discovered in the restoration of a flute machine that contains melodies from the legendary operetta "The Gypsy Baron" by Johann Strauss. This roller, one of a total of 28, is a remarkable musical treasure and is one of the oldest sound carriers with music from the Waltz king. According to a message from the pen, the roller, which has been carefully restored over the past eight years, was first played with "Radio Klassik Stephansdom" during CD recordings in January of this year. The melodies played by the roller comprise "hand, it has to be" and the "treasure roller", in addition to the well-known "fiaker song" by Gustav Pick and an unidentified piece.

insights into the Viennese music tradition

The flute machine, dated to 1820, offers fascinating insights into the interpretation of Viennese music of the late 19th century with its again life. Abbot Nikolaus Poch commented on this: "This type of machine is, as it were, acoustic time capsules, authentic interpreters from the past." The roller and the machine are exhibited in the museum of the Schottenstift and can be visited as part of guided tours. The music of the "Gypsy Baron" itself is not only known for its catchy melodies, but also for their dramatic act, which unites elements of romance and adventure and is embedded in the context of a dazzling, colorful music landscape. This operetta tells the history of Barinkay, who returns to his home to request his inheritance, and encounters obstacles and intrigues.

This discovery of the Scottish Foundation not only opens up new perspectives on the musical works of Johann Strauss', but also makes the impressive complexity of Viennese music history tangible for the audience. The CD "The Abbot Andreas' flute machine is available in the monastery shop of the Schottenstiftes and online and offers a way to enjoy the rediscovered melodies and to experience the magic of this musical journey through time up close, as well as on Johannstraussmuseum.at was reported.
