Green for Simmering: Started soon to redesign the main street
In recent years, the residents of Simmeringer Hauptstraße have repeatedly expressed the desire for a redesign. Especially during the 2020 election campaign, this topic was often present in the media. Now this wish is becoming a reality: The city of Vienna has initiated the first steps to green and redesign the street. District head Thomas Steinhart (SPÖ) has commissioned a feasibility study to check the potential of the traffic artery.
In autumn 2024, the official start for the redesign of the Simmeringer Hauptstraße is planned. The measures begin on Litfaßstrasse, where four new trees are planted and a new green area is to be created. These changes are part of a greater initiative to create a more appealing cityscape. The previously paved floor is replaced by a greener design to create a more inviting room for pedestrians.
planned measures and their importance
In addition to planting, structural measures are also provided. This includes a wave -shaped pavement, which should optically upgrade the area. Individual tree slices are combined into larger green areas and equipped with automatic irrigation systems. The installation of benches and drinking hydrants is also included in the plans to increase comfort.
The redesign takes place under the motto "Out of the asphalt". This initiative aims to reduce the extremely high sealing of 99 percent in the first section of the main street. According to the planning city councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ), tight sidewalks and the lack of quality of stay are currently essential points that make life on this street unattractive.
In spring 2025, a citizen survey will be carried out to experience further wishes and suggestions from the residents. This survey will play a crucial role in determining how citizens imagine a climate -friendly and livable Simmeringer Hauptstraße. The results of the survey should be available before the summer in order to present the further plans for the redesign to Zippererstrasse promptly.
The construction work for this next section is planned for 2026, which further increases the anticipation for the changes. The Neos city planning spokeswoman Selma Arapovic emphasizes that this redesign creates a cooler retreat for everyone who is traveling in the district. Preparations and first steps to redesign are therefore not only an important step for the street itself, but also a signal for the future design of urban rooms in Vienna.
