In the past few months, the construction project on Gallitzinstrasse 8-16 in Vienna-Ottakring has come to the center of the discussion. The “Pro Wilhelminenberg 2030” citizens' initiative has indicated serious concerns in an email to the district leaders Stefanie Lamp and Barbara Obermaier, which are related to the urban development contract from 2018. In this contract, various agreements had been made to compensate for space, which should provide for the clarification of ecological and structural aspects. But as it looks, social pressure remains unanswered.

The building site is located in the cold air -air area and in the area of ​​the fresh air bars, and over 6000 residents: inside express their displeasure about the fact that a massive residential building should take place here. The citizens' initiative wonders where the promised natural meadows, the green roofs and the ecological construction companion remain, and criticizes poor communication on the part of the city government.

This is particularly questionable because the entire construction project consists of up to 70 percent of local buildings. The initiative therefore calls for an evaluation and an immediate stop of the construction project, since it is in direct contradiction to the goals of the Viennese climate channel.

A point that particularly moves the initiative is the situation of the existing trees. According to the information from the competent authority, all applicable regulations should be observed, but the clearing of 58 trees was approved without obtaining a single tree. The required replacement plantings cost the developers only a fraction of the taxes they potentially pay. This raises the question of what responsibility for the city of Vienna is in and who monitors compliance with these regulations.

In addition, it remains unclear how the planning of the 1000 square meters of natural meadow, which has also been promised. Citizens: Inside, criticize that these areas were not determined in the final freedom planning. The demand for public transparency in relation to the urban development contract is also loudly charged. The citizens' initiative requires immediate information about the implementation of all contractually defined points.

In addition, the initiative criticizes the lack of ecological construction monitoring. The daily construction work seems to be going on without the appropriate supervision, and the construction process continues to run without appropriate control.

The citizens' initiative has repeatedly requested an answer to its inquiries, but has so far not received any feedback from the district manager. This leaves many concerns unanswered, which means that the residents are concerned. The initiative points out that the economic interests of the developers are in the foreground, while ecological and social issues are in the background. This is not only questionable, but also a clear violation of the prosperity of the city dwellers.
