Toilets on Thaliastrasse: Longer outage due to theft of grates

The public toilets on Thaliastrasse in Ottakring have been closed for months, and this has noticeable consequences for residents and visitors to the area. The reason for this is stolen floor gratings, which are essential for the safety and use of the toilet facilities.

Some residents like Manfred, who often suffers from the urge to urinate, find themselves in an awkward position. He reports on his frustrating attempts to find a functioning toilet and points to the nearest facility at Stillfriedplatz, which, however, is often heavily contaminated. “You won’t find any real relief there,” he says sarcastically.

The cause of the closures

The closure of toilets is not simply a local nuisance; it also raises questions about the maintenance and safety of public facilities. In July, employees of MA 48 discovered during an inspection that the screwed-on floor grilles were missing. These gates are crucial to preventing falls due to open holes, which led to the decision to temporarily close the toilets.

District leader Stefanie Lamp from the SPÖ commented on the incident and explained that such thefts are not an isolated case. Parts of public facilities are repeatedly affected, which calls into question the need for solid security precautions. “Unfortunately, this happens from time to time,” she said.

MA 48 assures the public that new grilles have already been ordered. However, there are massive delivery delays and the parts won't arrive for a few weeks. As soon as the new grilles are installed, the toilet facilities will be reopened so that visitors to Thaliastrasse will have an easier time using a toilet again.

In the meantime, residents have no choice but to resort to public toilets in the area, which are often not in better condition. This situation is seen by many as untenable and points to the need to take the maintenance of public facilities more seriously.
