In Ottakring, the district heating network is significantly expanded thanks to a new primary management. This project is promoted by Vienna Energie and the Viennese networks to ensure security of supply in the district and to create capacities for future building connections. By 2040, the Viennese district heating system should also be climate -neutral, which is a significant development in energy supply.
The newly planned primary management extends over more than 1.6 kilometers and runs from the Height of Weißgasse through several streets, including Haslingergasse and Sandleitengasse. For construction, over 32,000 tons of earth have to be moved, which illustrates the dimension of this project.
technical details and vision
The new heat plan stipulates that the line is equipped with two 40 centimeters wide steel pipes. In these pipes, hot water will flow with temperatures of up to 150 degrees and a pressure of 22.5 bar. Theoretically, this violence of thermal energy could supply up to 25,000 households, whereby the actual connections are usually carried out via a secondary network that ensures distribution.
Economic City Councilor Peter Hanke (SPÖ) emphasizes that this new infrastructure is part of a gradual plan to ensure climate and crisis-proof energy supply for all Viennese. The declared goal is a heat supply that is not based on fossil fuels.
commitment to climate neutrality
The project also contributes to the achievement of Vienna's climate neutrality by 2040. According to Michael Strebl, the managing director of Vienna Energie, has been completely dispensed with fossil fuels such as natural gas. Gerhard Fida from the Wiener Netzen added that a total of 400 kilometers will be relocated in Vienna in the coming years, which is an important step towards the energy transition.
There is a special focus on the Huber Block pioneer area, where the construction of a nationwide district heating supply begins. In the coming year, an area reorganizer is to be built, which acts as a link between the primary and secondary network.
