U1 subway in Vienna again in full operation-U2 will follow on December 6th
The Viennese subway users can breathe a sigh of relief: the U1 has been going back to normal since today. This decision, which strongly influenced the daily mobility of passengers, followed a fire that broke out in an uncontrolled special train on November 19. The train that was on the road without passengers catches fire and stopped in the tunnel between the stations of Taubengasse and South Tyroleans Platz/main train station. In the following weeks, the U1 was only active in sections between Oberlaa and Reumannplatz and between Schwedenplatz and Leopoldau, which presented numerous passengers with challenges.
The Viennese lines announced this morning that the U1 now runs again consistently between Leopoldau and Oberlaa. "We thank you for your patience and wish you a good trip!" It said in the message. Such announcements are a welcome relief for commuters who rely on the subway.
partial lock of the U2 ends on December 6th
In addition to restoring the U1, the return of the U2 is on the program. This has been partially closed since 2021 due to construction work. The section between Schottentor and Karlsplatz will be used again from December 6th. The Viennese lines, represented by the responsible city councilor Peter Hanke (SPÖ) and the managing director Gudrun Senk, announced that the originally planned re -establishment had to be delayed by more than a year. The conversion is necessary to expand the subway network, especially with the introduction of a new line U5.
The disused area was modified to make space for automated operating processes, including the installation of platform doors, which are intended to meet the requirements for the driverless U5. "Yes, it took longer," confirmed city councilor Hanke during a test drive for media representatives. He emphasized that these technical challenges will also offer teaching for the future.
Currently the correct preparations are in full swing. The Viennese lines are already carrying out test drives without passengers to ensure that everything works smoothly. "We have collected all the necessary reports," Senk assured, while the installation of a total of 200 lyse door modules with a glass area of 16,000 square meters was completed in the train stations. 4.8 kilometers of rails were also replaced to ensure the security standard.
cause of fire at U1 still unclear
Despite the positive developments, the cause of the fire that affected the U1 remains a mystery. The investigation continues, with the Viennese lines analyzing possible causes in close cooperation with an external fire expert and the vehicle manufacturer. On the one hand, the expert takes on an advisory role and will also create an expert opinion. At the same time, the State Criminal Police Office conducts extensive investigations.
The Viennese lines have assured that results of the investigations are published promptly to ensure transparency. For the commuters and the city, it is important to clarify these questions quickly without endangering trust in the public transport system.
