Nurses from Colombia strengthen the life campus in Meidling
In the Meidlinger district of Wolfganggasse, a remarkable life campus is created that aims to meet the urgent demand for nursing staff in Austria. In view of the alarming forecasts, which predict a defect of around 75,000 specialists in the nursing sector for 2030, the facility relies on international support. Nurses from Colombia in particular are recruited to close the existing gaps.
"Our calculations show that only around 40,000 nurses will be available by 2030," explains Monika Schüssler, the managing director of the Austrian young workers Movement (ÖJAB). In response to these challenges, both a strategy for immigration and training the specialists have been developed in Wolfganggasse. "We have taken up nurses from Colombia since July," she reports proudly.
expansion of nursing staff in Meidling
by 2027 you plan to increase the number of employees up to 60. The newly admitted nursing staff should keep their center of life in Meidling, which is facilitated by an offer of different living opportunities in the life campus. Students and trainees often live in the immediate vicinity of seniors, which not only promotes intergenerational understanding, but also contributes to the fact that the prospective specialists get a realistic insight into their future profession.
Sergio, one of the newly hired nurses, has already learned German in the Colombian capital Bogotá and now feels well integrated. "My colleagues helped me to get used to it," he says gratefully. Eight nurses are currently working that have come to Austria through the red and white-red card. These specialists work in both inpatient and mobile institutions.
The training of nurses is not neglected: A nursing school was founded in Storchengasse in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, which offers 32 people annually the one-year course on nursing assistance. Schüssler underlines: "We train the nursing staff themselves to meet the requirements."
