Future of sexual health: AIDS Aid Vienna makes urgent demands

On the occasion of the World Aid Day, which will be celebrated on December 1st, the AIDS Hilfe Vienna has formulated an urgent request to the future government. It should be increasingly involved in sexual health in Austria and take specific demands into account.

Despite the stable number of cases in the case of new HIV diagnoses, those affected suffer from considerable ignorance and stigmatization. Mirijam Hall, the chairwoman of AIDS Hilfe Vienna, emphasizes that fundamental education and prevention measures are lacking. While the new infections are stagnating with HIV, infections with other sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia and gonorrhea increase, which is alarming for society.

discrimination and the need for clarification

The discrimination against HIV-positive people, which is often caused by false ideas and ignorance in healthcare, is particularly serious. Hall reported around 70 percent of the discrimination incidents. There is a widespread view that handling HIV-infected special safety precautions, such as twice the nitrile gloves or extreme hygiene measures that are in fact not necessary. To change this, the AIDS help plans to create educational videos and to address the health staff directly.

"The scientific foundations for the treatment of HIV are complex and should be communicated better," adds Hall, referring to the outdated training in the healthcare system that is not sufficiently dealing with matter.

a new era of sexual education

Another central point of the demands refers to sex education in schools. The AIDS Aid Vienna appeals to ensure that free contraceptives are provided in schools. A pilot project is already running in Vorarlberg, but the lack of sex education education is still a major problem. Many young people state that they do not use contraceptives, which is a clear sign of action. Hall emphasizes that the quality of sexual studies fluctuates heavily and that there are no clear specifications.

In order to remedy this grievance, both the educational institutions and the parents are taken responsibility to ensure comprehensive and quality information.

In order to remedy the lack of information and care, the AIDS Hilfe Vienna plans to open a “Center for Sexual Health” in Vienna-Mariahilf. Offers such as tests, consultations and prevention measures are to be merged under one roof there. Hall sees a way to offer the urgently needed support for the population and at the same time promote access to information about sexual health.

These initiatives are not only necessary to raise awareness, but also to help affected and endangered to live a self -determined life. "The construction of the center should be completed in the next two years in order to provide everyone the necessary resources," says the Aids Aid Aid.

These topics are particularly relevant because they affect the social and health reality of hundreds of people in Austria. AIDS help from politics demands quick action to protect the health and well -being of all citizens and at the same time fight against discrimination.
