Future of e-commerce: FHWN students discover Amazon in Vienna

At Amazon in Vienna it became clear today that the future of e-commerce is already emerging on the Wieselburg campus. Students from the “E-Commerce Management” master’s degree program at the Wiener Neustadt University of Applied Sciences visited the distribution center in Vienna-Liesing. This excursion is part of the collaboration between Amazon and the university of applied sciences, which is intended to offer students practical insights into the company's logistics and operations.

Over 1,500 Austrian small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) that use shipping through Amazon benefit from these processes. Florian Brezina, site manager of the distribution center in Vienna-Liesing, emphasized how important the collaboration between the more than 120 employees and the local delivery partners is in order to deliver the packages on time and reliably.

The event offers students an excellent opportunity to interact directly with experts from the industry and experience their experiences and knowledge up close. Rainer Neuwirth, head of the e-commerce master's degree program, emphasized how important such excursions are in order to link the theoretical foundations of e-commerce with real knowledge.

The students had the opportunity to find out how many companies from Lower Austria successfully sell their products via Amazon. In 2023, over 350 SMEs from the region, including sustainable brands and start-ups, recorded impressive sales figures. Christoph Sturmlechner, one of the founders of Yosana, reported on the situation of his company, which had already generated sales of 10,000 euros in the first two months after joining Amazon.

It is worth highlighting that over 2,500 SMEs in Austria, including more than 70 million euros in export sales in 2023, use the platform to expand their brands internationally. Many of these companies sold over two million products in 2023, which is important for both the growth of the brands and the creation of new jobs.

The courses are supplemented by the free e-learning portal “Quickstart Online”, which Amazon initiated together with partners such as the Austrian Chamber of Commerce. Here, entrepreneurs can receive valuable information and training on e-commerce topics, from setting up their own web shop to using marketplaces effectively.

For this combination of theory and practice, the collaboration between Amazon and educational institutions such as the Wiener Neustadt University of Applied Sciences is crucial. It not only offers students valuable insights, but also the participating companies a platform to expand their knowledge and sell their products effectively.
