U1 fire in Vienna: chaos in the public transport network and injuries among employees

On Tuesday evening there was a dramatic incident on the subway network in Vienna when a fire broke out in a section of the U1 line. The fire, for reasons that are still unclear, occurred in a special train while it was traveling and led to a massive deployment of the fire brigade and a disruption to public transport.

Although fortunately there were no passengers on board, six Wiener Linien employees suffered minor injuries. The machine operator who was able to operate the train started the emergency procedures and left the vehicle in time. She also received immediate medical attention and psychological support.

Details about the fire and its effects

The fire broke out between the Taubstummengasse and Hauptbahnhof/Südtiroler Platz stations, which made it necessary to evacuate these stops immediately as a lot of smoke was rising. According to the professional fire brigade, which responded with over 100 emergency services and 20 vehicles, the fire had to be fought in the tunnel using breathing apparatus and special extinguishing agents. The operation was successful and the fire was quickly extinguished. Nevertheless, the affected train remained on the route until the evening.

Wiener Linien officially confirmed that the U1 currently only runs between Leopoldau and Schwedenplatz as well as Keplerplatz and Oberlaa. The four affected stations, Stephansplatz, Karlsplatz, Taubstummengasse and Hauptbahnhof/Südtiroler Platz, will remain closed for the time being. These traffic restrictions force many commuters to switch to alternative lines such as the U3 or U4.

The effects are also clearly noticeable on the roads, as many passengers report. Traffic has increased due to the diversions. Wiener Linien has already responded by increasing tram operations between Reumannplatz and Schwedenplatz to meet increased demand.

However, the question of when the U1 can run regularly again remains open. A spokesman for Wiener Linien emphasized: “Everything is still being clarified.” It is recommended that you check current information before traveling on Wednesday morning as the situation remains dynamic.
