New Leopold Quartier: Sustainable Living on the Danube Canal

On the Danube Canal in Vienna, an innovative city district is being built that combines environmentally friendly construction and modern way of life. With the Leopold Quartier, UBM Development AG is planning an important step towards sustainable urban living. Office and living rooms are built on an area of three hectares that stand out due to their unique building material.

With the decision to build in wood construction, the project sets standards in European architecture. The use of 2,800 cubic meters for the nine-story office building means a CO₂ saving of 2,700 tons compared to conventional concrete buildings. "The decision for the Leopold Quartier is an active answer to climate change," says Peter Schaller, board member of UBM Development AG.

The adjacent residential project, known as Leopold Quartier Living, will offer 253 apartments from ready -made wooden elements. Another 3,800 cubic meters of wood are used here. The completion of the office space is planned for the end of 2025, while the apartments are to be obtained in early 2026. These comprehensive construction projects pursue a sustainable energy concept in which geothermal earth probes and photovoltaic systems are used for environmentally friendly energy supply.

In addition, the office building strives for a DGNB gold certification that aims at ecological efficiency and sustainable construction quality. As a general contractor of the project, Karl-Heinz Strauss from Porr AG emphasizes that wood is an ideal building material for the cities of the future. Due to the possibility of recycling the material at the end of its lifespan, it effectively closes the cycle of sustainability.

"In Austria, around 30 million cubic meters of wood grow every year, of which 90 percent are used," explains Strauss. This creates around 2,000 single -family houses in the construction industry, which shows how important the recycling and the sustainable handling of natural resources are.

It was originally planned to build the Leopold Quartier as a large conference hotel. However, due to the concerns of the residents and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the concept was adapted to rely more on homely and office sales as well as an environmentally friendly construction.

For all interested parties, there is more information about the plans and developments of the Leopold Quartier. In the coming years, this project will not only set new standards in architecture, but also in the area of sustainable urban development. The construction work is scheduled to begin in 2024, with a clear vision for the future use of this future-oriented district. This decision follows the latest developments , which are all the more focused on the project.
