A look at the history of the Augustinian Church

The roots of the Augustinians in Vienna go back to the 13th century when the order was founded. The then anonymized historian reports that Frederick the beautiful man who had been captured by King Ludwig to Bayer promised the construction of a new monastery and a church in 1327 to be grateful for his liberation. This foundation was financed by the yield of toll fees and the sale of valuable gemstones.

The construction of the church began in 1330 under the direction of the master builder Dietrich Landtner. The church was completed nine years later, in 1339. The consecration took place on November 1, 1349 by Auxiliary Bishop Ortolf von Atzenbruck, at a time when Vienna still belonged to the diocese of Passau. The history of this church is deeply rooted in the city and reflects the development of Viennese church music.

In view of the upcoming anniversary, additional festivities are also planned. A musical evening concert will take place on October 31 at 7:30 p.m., the works by W.A. Mozart includes, including the famous Requiem and the clarinet concert.

The celebrations for the 675th anniversary not only represent a review of the history and the importance of the Augustinian church, but also a tribute to art and music that make this place alive. Information about the event can be found on the official website of the church www.augustiner.at
