25 years of the deaf outpatient clinic: barrier -free medical care in Vienna

25 years ago, the deaf outpatient clinic in the Hospital of the Merciful Brothers Vienna was launched and has made an important contribution to barrier -free medical care since then. On the occasion of this anniversary, a solemn event took place in the Raiffeisen Forum Vienna, in which over 200 guests came together from various social areas to appreciate the commitment of the facility.

The outpatient clinic has been offering its services in the Austrian sign language since 1999. The special occasion was celebrated by lighting the entrance area of the hospital in Turquoise, the color of the deaf. This sign of solidarity is intended to highlight the importance of the deaf culture and show support. The hospital is located at Johannes-von-Gott-Platz 1 and looks after around 30 patients every day.

growing demand and comprehensive offers

annually the outpatient clinic recorded around 120 inpatient recordings, with about six new patients per month. "There are over 1,000 deaf people in Vienna, so there is high demand for specialized offers," explained senior physician Thomas Ströbele. Since its foundation, the ambulance has developed into a place that gives priority to the unique needs of its patients and offers comprehensive care.

The founding of the outpatient clinic was carried out on the initiative of Humbert Spitzer and Frater Paulus Kohler, who recognized the need for such a offer. The close cooperation with the deaf association has proven to be crucial for success. Today the deaf outpatient clinic offers a wide range of medical services, from preventive examinations to vaccinations to the treatment of acute diseases. In addition, a pelvic floor exercise group is offered that is specially tailored to the needs of the patients.

expert team in sign language

The team of the outpatient clinic is made up of experts who dominate sign language, including the senior physician Ströbele as well as nursing staff and assistants, including a communication assistant. In addition to medical care, psychological and social consultations are also offered. This specialized support makes the deaf outpatient clinic the only of its kind in Vienna, as the overall manager of the hospital emphasized.

The importance of the work of the merciful brothers in the care of marginal groups was emphasized by those responsible. Thanks to the long -term cooperation with the city of Vienna and the financial support that enables this initiative, the outpatient clinic can continue to offer its high -quality services.
