Vienna River Cycle Path remains closed due to flood clean-up
The Vienna River cycle path, which stretches from Auhof to the Kennedy Bridge, will remain closed for two to three weeks due to necessary repairs following the flood events. This information was confirmed by the responsible Vienna Waters Department (MA 45) on Thursday at the request of the APA.
Thomas Kozuh-Schneeberger, the spokesman for MA 45, stated that all preparatory work - including approvals and awards - was successfully completed this week. “We will start the final work next week,” he explained. This shows that the repair work is nearing completion, although it will still take time.
Extent of damage and recommended alternative route
The work is expected to take two to three weeks to complete before the cycle path can be reopened to traffic. In this context, the city's mobility agency has recommended Auhofstrasse in Vienna-Hietzing as an alternative route. This is due to the fact that the path runs without crossings in the Vienna riverbed and has to be closed during floods.
In mid-September, the Vienna River experienced a 1,000-year flood, meaning the damage was more extensive than usual. In several places, railings were washed away, signs were bent and stones were removed. This damage required careful inspection and extensive repair work, which took place at various points along the cycle path.
Closing the cycle path is not only important for safety reasons, but it also allows the necessary work to be carried out to prevent future damage. Many cyclists and walkers have shown some patience as the city moves forward with repairs and ensures infrastructure remains safe and usable.
The clean-up work after the flood has not yet been completed, but the department's efforts to restore the cycle path as quickly as possible are a positive sign for residents and regular users of the Vienna River cycle path. Further information and updates on the situation will be provided by MA 45 and it is worth following the city's official channels to stay informed of the progress.
