Auhofstrasse in Hietzing: Cycling becomes safer and greener!
Auhofstraße, 1130 Wien, Österreich - In Vienna-Hietzing, the conversion of Auhofstrasse to the bicycle road began. As Vienna.at , the new route extends over a length of about 1.1 kilometers, between Dommayergasse and Feldmülgasse. The completion of the work is planned by the end of summer 2025, which is part of the comprehensive Viennese radoff offensive. The aim of the redesign is to make cycling along these avenue more safely and more comfortable and at the same time create an important route towards the city center.
The Auhofstrasse will also act as an alternative route at floods, as it runs in parallel to the Wientalradweg. Wider, green sidewalks should also improve the situation for pedestrians. In front of the construction site, information events for residents were carried out in order to incorporate their concerns into the planning. The existing tree population is preserved and additional green areas as well as indoor shrubs are intended.
special features and traffic calming
In order to improve the visual relationships, sidewalking at intersections are also realized. Bicycle parking systems along the route are also planned. The roadway is clearly marked with large pictograms as a bicycle road, while increased intersection plateaus and adapted one -way regulations should contribute to traffic calming. While vehicle access is still possible, there is an exception at the intersection with St.-Veit-Gasse.
An interesting regulation is that cycling people can use the entire route in both directions and side by side. These measures are related to the Viennese radoffive, which includes more than 250 projects and around 100 kilometers in the main bike path network until the end of the legislative period. Around 130 million euros have been invested in the cycling infrastructure since 2019. The cycling share in Vienna is already 11 percent in 2024, an increase compared to 7 percent in 2019.
Expansion of the wheel infrastructure
The radoffsive is continued. Around 200 cycle path projects have been implemented in this legislative period since 2021. According to wien.gv.at , almost 130 million euros were invested during this period, with the aim of creating safe and consistent bike connections. A further 24 kilometers of new cycling infrastructure are planned in the construction program for 2025. Between 2021 and 2024, almost 100 kilometers of new cycling infrastructure were created or planned in the main cycle path network, as well as 52 kilometers in the district network.
One of the upcoming projects of the cycle path offensive is the redesign of Meiselstraße and Alserbachstrasse, which will further improve the bike connections. The mobility city councilor Ulli Sima emphasizes the importance of the growing number of cyclists and emphasizes the need for an attractive offer for sustainable mobility in the city.
The results and analyzes of urban mobility, in particular on foot and bike traffic, are comprehensively documented. Reports by Mobilitaetsagentur.at show that cycling and foot in Vienna are continuously promoted. With various studies, the mobility agency ensures better planning and design of public spaces in order to make mobility in Vienna safely and environmentally friendly.
