Austria's parties in conversation: First step to the new government

After the latest National Council elections in Austria, there is a significant turn in the political landscape. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) under Herbert Kickl has won a clear election victory, while the People's Party (ÖVP) under Karl Nehammer had to accept dramatic losses that they were doing behind the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ).

The government's formation phase is just around the corner, although the official start is still pending. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has announced that it will have personal discussions with all the party leader before the formal exploratory talks. The process begins with a conversation with Kickl from the FPÖ, followed by meetings with Nehammer and SPÖ boss Andreas Babler. Talks with the Greens and Neos will follow on Tuesday. Van der Bellen will only start his public relations work after these consultations.

informal meetings between ÖVP and SPÖ

In parallel to the official discussions, there are already tendencies of an informal approach between the ÖVP and SPÖ. A joint meeting has been announced for Tuesday, which, according to ÖVP, is to serve the mutual exchange. Main topics could be health, security, migration, inflation and affordable living.

In the past few days, contacts between top representatives of the two parties have already been made. Doris Bures, the second President of the National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka, visited the National Council President, and Karl Nehammer had discussions with Michael Ludwig, the Viennese mayor.

Despite these discussions, there are concerns about certain personnel proposals from the SPÖ within the ÖVP, especially with regard to Kai Jan Krainer and Julia Herr. The ÖVP sees Krainer critically because of its role in the U-committees, while Herr is considered to the left.

On the other hand, the SPÖ seems to increase its freedom of negotiation in order to achieve better results in the upcoming state elections in Vorarlberg and Styria. Within the SPÖ it is discussed whether negotiations with Nehammer or possibly another person can be continued.

These developments could have far -reaching effects on future government formation in Austria. The political dynamics change quickly and many eyes are focused on the upcoming conversations.
