New stadium for Wiener Sport-Club: Modernization starts in Hernals
On Wednesday, the groundbreaking ceremony for the redesign of the stadium of the Vienna Sports Club in Vienna was officially set. This traditional football arena will be modernized by the end of 2025, with a planned commissioning in the second quarter of 2026. The number of spectators will increase to around 5,500 for national and around 4,500 for international games.
This exciting project not only aims at optical renewal, but also a broader usability of the venue. With the construction according to the "UEFA category 2" standard, it will also be possible to play games of the ÖFB women's national team, national teams as well as rugby and American football matches.
modernization and sustainability
The renovation started in June when the main grandstand and the north grandstand were demolished. These last bastions of the former first division club, who are lovingly referred to by the fans as cemetery stands, now receive roofing. In addition, the new roofs are equipped with a greenery and photovoltaic systems to make the stadium energy self-sufficient.
The main grandstand is also equipped with a powerful photovoltaic system that is able to produce around 100,000 kWh of clean electricity. Combined with a heat pump system, the stadium should continue to cover a large part of its own energy requirement, with excess energy being fed into the Viennese power grid.
The renovation of the south grandstand, known as the blue grandstand, will also take place, so that the stadium soon shines in new splendor. It is interesting that football has been played in the as line continuously since 1904 - presumably the longest continuous game in a place in all of Europe. The anticipation for the new home in this traditional environment is already noticeable.
Football section leader David Krapf-Günther expressed his mixed feelings: "It was also a crying eye to experience the phases of demolition, but also to see a great relief for the long invested time and work on how part of our club's future accepts new form." The exact costs of the project are still unknown, but are estimated between seven and ten million euros. Further information can be found here .
