Vienna is investing 192 million in school building: new rooms for the future
Wien plans to invest strong investments in educational institutions: In 2025 and 2026, a total of 192 million euros are to flow into the expansion and redesign of schools. This measure is part of a comprehensive concept to meet the increasing need for school places in the capital.
The city administration recently presented the planned projects for the next two years. In the first year, the completion of three buildings is on the plan. Four new educational rooms will be set up on the top floor at Mittelgasse 24/Spalowskygasse 5 in Mariahilf. Laaer-Berg-Straße 170 receives six additional classrooms for elementary school, while Selma-Lagerlöf-Gasse 20 in the 10th district gets 16 new educational rooms and places for day care.
expansion of school infrastructure
The need for these measures results from the growth of families in the seaside city. In order to meet this increase, temporary mobile classes are to be built, which, in addition to educational areas, also include multifunctional areas as well as lounge and staff areas. These new facilities are particularly important to meet the requirements of the growing population, as the department head of MA 56 - Schools, Andrea Trattnig, explained.
In addition, the school at Neilreichgasse 11 in the 10th district will receive such a mobile class in order to cover the need for school places and to secure training for future classes. A temporary new building at Neilreichgasse 126 will include nine educational rooms. However, these developments are not without controversy because residents have expressed concerns.
For 2026, an expansion of the program is planned. At six locations, extensions and renovations are to be carried out in order to provide a total of 53 new classrooms. Among the projects there are facilities in the 10th district and in other parts of the city that should meet the growing demand for educational places.
The Vienna City Councilor Christoph Return emphasizes that the city will continue to check rental options for additional space. "The need for school room remains high," he continues. The investments aim to offer all children and adolescents living in Vienna an optimal educational environment in which they can develop their potential.
Overall, the planned educational investments in Vienna show that serious efforts are made to adapt the infrastructure to the needs of the growing population. For more information about these developments, interested parties can read .
