Vienna City Marathon 2025: registration record and high number of participants

Vienna City Marathon 2025: registration record and high number of participants

Interesting running is steadily increasing, and this is particularly evident in the Vienna City Marathon (VCM). The organizers report an astonishing increase in registrations: There are currently impressive 70 percent more participants compared to the previous year. With an appointment for April 6, 2025, this mega event is within reach, and it is high time to register if you want to be there.

in Vienna, a city with a deeply rooted running culture, this trend becomes particularly clear. The big marathons, such as that in Berlin and New York, have broken new records worldwide. Berlin recently celebrated the largest marathon with over 54,000 finishers, while in New York over 55,000 runners finished. With these impressive numbers in the background, the VCM could also achieve a record.

a new running boom

Katrin Widu, managing director of the VCM, speaks of an unprecedented boom in the running area. She finds that more and more younger people and more women are participating in marathons. The increase in registrations among 20 to 30 year olds is particularly striking. These developments illustrate that running is now part of a permanent part of life for many.

Dominik Konrad, also managing director of the VCM, has a clear message to the future participants: "A heartfelt thank you to those who have already registered for the Vienna City Marathon 2025. We recommend that they will quickly register as long as the capacity is closed. The registration period is closed much earlier than in previous years." For those who have an eye on the Vienna Half Marathon, the registration will soon end, and then there will be a waiting list.

The increasing interest comes not only from individual participants, but also companies and charity organizations show great interest in the marathon. In order to meet this demand, the organizers are working on the creation of additional capacities. Their goal is to get more runners on the track, especially on the classic marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers.

sustainability and growth

In order to implement these plans, the organizers cooperate with the crowd science expert Marcel Altenburg from the Manchester Metropolitan University. The latter works to optimize the route in such a way that not only more runners can participate, but also decreases the density on the route, which should promote a pleasant experience for all participants overall. Altenburg explains that targeted measures in crowd management can already create more space on the existing marathon route in Vienna.

Special attention also gets the smaller events such as the Coca-Cola inclusion run and the "bat", both of which take place on April 5, 2025. The latter is specially designed for children between the ages of 3 and 6 and represents another opportunity to arouse enthusiasm for running.

The registrations are already underway, and if you don't want to take part in the Vienna City Marathon, you should take the opportunity to register for one of the other events. Interested parties can find details on the official website of the marathon at www.vienna-marathon.com.
