Security costs: police operation according to conflicts in Vienna

In July 2024, an intensive police campaign occurred in Vienna, which was founded in response to ethnic arguments, especially between Syrian and Chechen adolescents. This measure cost the authorities a total of 336,723 euros, as can be seen from a parliamentary request from FPÖ MP Hannes Amesbauer to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP).

The police carried out the campaign between July 9 and 25, with emergency services from six federal states, with the exception of Tyrol and Vorarlberg, to be sent to Vienna. During this time, a total of 4,086 hours were on the missions. 196 ads and 23 arrests resulted in not only criminal law but also administrative offenses.

background of the conflicts

The ethnic arguments were initiated by an incident on June 3 in the Author Park in Vienna favorites, in which a Chechen of Syrians was seriously injured with a knife. On July 1, the tensions were released again on Dopschstrasse in Vienna-Floridsdorf. The Situation finally escalated on the weekend of July 5th to 7th, when rival groups met in several nightly conflicts.

The confrontation in the Anton-Kummerer Park and Klosterneuburger Straße in Brigittenau was particularly violent, followed by an incident at the station area in Meidling. In these clashes, a total of seven people suffered injuries, four of them seriously. The youngest known incident was registered on July 10th at Floridsdorf station.

During the police operation, there were injuries among the officials, but there was no firearms. A single police officer injured himself in the event of a fall. The authorities hope for a de -escalation of the situation through the intensive controls and the reinforced operations.
