Vienna expands Liesingbach cycle path: new routes and green spaces!
Today, May 23, 2025, Vienna announced a decisive step to improve its cycling infrastructure. The city is working on expanding the Liesingbach cycle path in the 23rd district, which will in future lead from Riegermühle to Schrailplatz. This new connection will be connected to the existing route on Meisgeyergasse and shows Vienna's commitment to sustainable mobility and a more environmentally friendly traffic flow. [ots.at].
The new cycle path will be around 500 meters long and up to 2.5 meters wide and will run directly along Brunner Straße. It will cross Brunner Straße and lead to Meisgeyergasse and Reklewskigasse. This is a significant gap in an important part of the main cycle network, which is continually being expanded to increase safety and comfort for cyclists.
Construction phases and traffic adjustments
As part of the project, the roadways on Erlaaer Straße and Brunner Straße will be replaced due to damage caused over time. In addition, the “Brunner Straße/Erlaaer Straße” stop on bus route 62A will be renovated. The first construction phase is scheduled to last until July 1, 2025. During this phase, turning left onto Erlaaer Straße is not possible. In the second construction phase, which begins during the summer holidays, the bus stop on bus line 60A will be removed without replacement until the end of the holidays. Further construction site information will be made available in September. wien.gv.at highlights that this is part of a comprehensive initiative to promote cycle paths in Vienna.
The cycle path offensive in Vienna is already in full swing and includes a total of over 250 projects, as part of which almost 100 kilometers of cycle paths have already been created. A total of around 130 million euros were invested in expanding the cycling infrastructure, so that the share of cycle paths rose to 11% in 2024 - compared to 7% in 2019. fahrradwien.at adds that more than 9 kilometers of new cycle paths will be created in Liesing by 2026, which will close important gaps and improve the connection within the Improve district.
Sustainable urban development
The introduction of a comprehensive parking zone in Liesing also creates new uses for public space. Parking space utilization in Alt Erlaa has fallen by around 30 percent, giving the city space to create new green spaces and cycle paths. The initiative to improve cycling infrastructure follows a comprehensive concept to make cycling in Vienna safer and more comfortable and is supported by annual investments of around 20 million euros. In 2023, the total amount for the cycle path offensive was 35 million euros.
In summary, the expansion of the Liesingbach cycle path represents another important step in the Vienna cycle path offensive - an initiative that not only increases the quality of life of citizens, but also contributes to promoting environmentally friendly transport in the city.
