Traffic disruptions in Vienna: A23 and A4 affected by December

In the night of November 27th to November 28, 2024, the Southeast Tangent (A23) between knot Kaisermühlen and Hirschstetten is blocked in both directions. This measure, which lasts from 11:59 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., is necessary due to work in the Stadlauer and Hirschstettner tunnel. Drivers should be prepared for avoiding in time and choosing alternative routes.

The blocking is not the only one that drivers could affect in the coming weeks. By mid -December, road users on the A23 between the Prater and Handelskai node and between the distribution group have to expect favorites and the belt with possible delays. Here there is occasionally a narrow traffic management and speed limits at 60 km/h. Up to two lanes could be blocked in the night, which can extend the travel time.

construction sites and traffic disruptions

The ongoing work and the associated traffic disruptions are due to several factors. On the one hand, there is extensive covering work on the East Autobahn (A4) between the Prater and Schwechat node, which will take advantage of until September 2026. These measures also include the repair of bridges, which ensures additional complications.

  • The traffic routing is subject to amends, whereby at least two lanes are still available on working days.
  • A speed restriction of 60 km/h applies, reinforced by Section Control.
  • night locking of ramps could also be necessary, especially on weekends.

According to traffic experts, longer delays during traffic peaks and travel traffic can be expected. In particular on weekends, incoming traffic tours could lead to additional traffic jams.

For everyone who depends on the A23 or A4, it is advisable to regularly pursue the traffic reports. ASFINAG will continue to provide information about the situation on the motorways to help drivers adapt their routes accordingly. Further details on the construction sites and the associated traffic measures can be found on the ASFINAG.
