Process against Afghan refugee: bloodbath in Wiener brothel shaken

In Vienna there is a 27-year-old Afghan refugee, Ebdullah A., from Monday after being accused of brutally murdering three sex workers. The shocking events took place on February 23 in a brothel in Vienna-Brigittenau and shaken the public, not least due to the cruelty of the crime.

According to the investigation, Ebdullah A. is said to have attacked the three women, including the operator of the brothel, with a kitchen knife. The attack was so violent that the victims could only be identified two days after the crime. Another victim suffered injuries, but survived the attack by hiding in a room. The case is classified as particularly serious by the authorities, and the circumstances of the crime raise many questions.

crime and psychological constitution

The mental constitution of the accused contributes to the complexity of the case. Court appraiser diagnosed Ebdullah A. Paranoid schizophrenia, which questions his accountability at the time of crime. After his arrest, A. caused a sensation with his statements by describing his victims as "witches" and allies of Satan. Visibly influenced by his mental illness, he saw himself as a "moral guard", whose task was to act in the name of his faith. "An inner voice ordered me to start and take revenge," he said of his motives.

In the past few months, however, Ebdullah A. has made a change. In the meantime, he shows remorse and claims to have misinterpreted a "wink of God". He reports of an incident in a mosque in which he had believed that Allah deliberately captured him to prevent him from the crime. Nevertheless, he decided to open and flee a window, which ultimately led to the crime.

current status and defense

The defender of Ebdullah A., Philipp Springer, expressed that the psychological condition of his client had improved through medication. The accused is now less dangerous and takes part in various activities with other inmates. Nevertheless, the situation for the bereaved of the victims remains tense while they are waiting for the legal decisions. The presumption of innocence protects Ebdullah A. until the judgment was announced. The public pursues the process with excitement, since it not only raises questions about mental health, but also for the responsibility and consequences of such brutal acts.
