Cheese and chicory: An enjoyable weekend at the market!

On November 22nd and 23rd, the Markthalle market hall in Vienna is expecting an extraordinary event under the inviting motto “All cheese, all chicory!” In this special event, visitors can enjoy a delicious combination of exquisite cheese specialties and an informative crash course on chicory. Chicory, a type of vegetable that is often unknown in Austria, is presented here as the secret star of winter. It is rich in bitter substances and is often referred to as the “salad of autumn and winter”, and the event aims to highlight this healthy and tasty ingredient.

The variety of chicory, which is already very popular in Italian markets, will be brought into focus in Austria with the event. Friday will be particularly interesting, when two experts await visitors: Wolfgang Palme, a vegetable researcher specializing in winter vegetables, and the top chef Johann Reisinger offer exciting insights and tastings. With their support, guests will learn more about the preparation and health benefits of these delicious salads.

Numerous cheese producers from all over Austria will also be present in the market hall. Renowned businesses such as “Vom Schoberhof”, “Mandls Ziegenhof”, “Käsehütte Maria Taferl” and “Kasplatzl” present their specialties. Whether spicy mountain cheese, mild semi-hard cheese or aromatic goat cheese – there is something suitable for every cheese lover. This event not only celebrates the diversity of local cheese culture, but also highlights the importance of regional production.

A special highlight is the visit of Andrea Pölz from the Lower Austrian Chamber of Agriculture and Andrea Ghedina from Smarties Bio. Ghedina brings seeds of traditional chicory varieties to be grown in Austria. This initiative is in line with efforts to enrich agriculture in Austria through sustainable and traditional farming methods.

The Markterei has set itself the task of bringing producers and consumers closer together and acting as a platform for exchange. The event is not only an opportunity to taste local delicacies, but also an opportunity to learn something new about healthy eating and local products.

The opening hours of the market hall are every Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The address is Severingasse 7, 1090 Vienna. These two days promise a unique culinary experience not to be missed to discover the benefits of cheese and chicory.
