Progress in the U5 building: New station on Frankhplatz planned for 2026
In Vienna-Alsergrund, something is happening: The construction site for the new U5 station on Frankhplatz is developing quickly. Work on the barrier -free station has been running since February 2019 and the official opening date is scheduled for 2026. The planning stipulates that the station will have four barrier -free access, which makes it accessible to all passengers.
Currently, the out and entry options of the future U5 station are easy to see. This includes platforms, each of which is three and a half meters wide and are created at a depth of around 17.5 meters. The first escalators are already on the way and are being assembled. Three escalators are planned, which will facilitate the path from the passage under Frankhplatz to the platforms.
progress in track construction
An important stage in this project is the relocation of the subway tracks, which is already promoted at high pressure. The necessary materials for track construction have been delivered since the beginning of September. The openings at the street level are precisely tailored to the required length of the rail parts. Project manager Eva-Maria Weiss said: "We are just lifting the tracks down to the construction site so that we can start laying." So the next step of the construction work is imminent.
Preparations for track construction have already been completed and the route is ready for installation. A high track structure is used to minimize noise and shocks and relieve the surrounding neighborhood. "The concrete takes up everything," reports Weiss.
opening in 2026
If everything goes according to plan, the U5 station at Frankhplatz will finally be inaugurated in 2026. However, numerous construction work is still required, including not only track construction, but also the complete installation of escalators. This station will be the first new station on the U5 line and is an important step for the further development of the Vienna U-Bahn network.
