Christmas dinner is becoming more expensive: turkey and chestnuts are skyrocketing in price!
The festive season brings traditional dishes to many households, including the popular holiday meal served on December 25th: roasted turkey, red cabbage and cranberries. But this year the prices for these treats have skyrocketed! Loud Today.at The retail prices for turkey meat in Austria have risen to a shocking 4.5 to 10 euros per kilogram. This is a direct result of global climate change, which is putting a lot of strain on turkey farms due to rising temperatures and stressful conditions for the animals. The effects are clearly noticeable: the animals lose weight and costs rise.
There are also significant price increases for red cabbage and cranberries. These developments are due not only to unfortunate harvest conditions, but also to higher production costs, also caused by climate change, as the University of Wisconsin explains. Chestnuts, a popular side dish, are also affected: In Vienna, a kilo of fresh chestnuts now costs around 12 euros, and for eight roasted chestnuts you have to pay an average of 3.50 euros. A few years ago prices were significantly lower. Advancing global warming has also put cabbage sprouts at great risk, as increasing numbers of pests can destroy entire crops.
Modern preparation simplifies traditional cuisine
But despite the price increases, there are also bright spots in Christmas cooking! So reported Brandstätterverlag from the popular preparation of chestnut rice, a dish made from sweetened chestnut puree. Today, pre-cooked and peeled chestnuts can easily be purchased in the supermarket, making preparation much easier. Combined with cranberries and some whipped cream, the result is a delicious dessert that has become a tradition. Simple recipes make it possible to enjoy the festive season with delicious food despite rising prices.
