Vienna election 2025: SPÖ remains strong, FPÖ celebrates historical profits!

After yesterday's Wiener election, all party leaders are satisfied, despite sometimes clear losses. The incumbent Mayor Michael Ludwig from the SPÖ was pleased to comment on the election result and announced exploratory talks. According to the first projections, the SPÖ received 39.3 percent of the vote and thus remains the most dominant political force in Vienna, even if it has a decrease of 2.3 percent compared to 2020. The SPÖ gives three mandates and comes to a total of 43 mandates.

The freedom (FPÖ), on the other hand, showed impressive growth and achieved 20.5 percent of the votes, which corresponds to a tripling compared to the last election. Dominik Nepp, the top candidate of the FPÖ, described the result as a "enormous advance of trust" and asks Mayor Ludwig to end his exclusion policy. The FPÖ was able to gain 14 mandates and now comes to a total of 22 seats in the municipal council.

Judith Pühringer of the Greens spoke of a "fantastic" result and an "unprecedented catch -up". Her party achieved 14.7 percent of the vote and thus remains in third place. The Greens were only able to accept a loss of mandate from one seat and now have a total of 15 mandates. Pühringer was ready to form a stable coalition with the SPÖ.

Bettina Emmerling from the Neos also expressed a positive statement about the best result of her party in Vienna, with a gain of two mandates for a total of ten seats. At the same time, Karl Mahrer admitted significant losses from the ÖVP, but put it into perspective and signaled the willingness to cooperate with the mayor. The previous coalition of SPÖ and NEOS could continue to be an option to stabilize the government.

The political landscape in Vienna has changed significantly through this election, even if the SPÖ emerges as a winner. Political observers expect that a continuation of the cooperation between the SPÖ, NEOS or the Greens will be the most likely government option. According to the results, the proposals are kept for possible coalitions in a broad spectrum, which can be expected in the coming weeks.
