Vienna starts climate protection offensive: 25,000 trees for the future!

On April 24, 2025,

Vienna passed a pioneering climate law that includes a variety of measures to protect the environment and to promote green spaces. With the new law, protection for trees is improved and 500,000 square meters of green spaces have already been designed. In addition, 25,000 trees were planted to create a sustainable urban area. MEGA renaturation projects are intended to strengthen the city's ecosystems, while 1,600 public drinking fountains improve drinking water supply. Vienna is also characterized by the lowest soil consumption in Austria, with a value of only 0.1 hectares per day.

Wien also starts the largest cycle path offensive in its history with an investment of 130 million euros in 200 projects. The aim is to create 100 km of new cycling infrastructure by the end of the year. The Modal Split in Vienna is currently divided into 34% of public transport, 30% to foot, 11% cycling and 25% car traffic. These measures are part of a strategy that promotes the sustainable traffic and energy mix of the city.

success in climate protection

The city has already recorded records in solar power generation. With an output of 250 MWP, 50 MWP of which are installed on city's own areas, as well as a continued decline in greenhouse gases by 31% since 2005, Vienna provides its position as a pioneer in climate protection. Despite population growth of 21%, energy consumption in the city has been reduced by 33.7%, which is due to the expansion of solar power and investments in public transport.

In addition, the Vienna Vienna Plan 2035 comprises active measures to promote the green space, which covers more than 50% of the city area. The city has already launched over 320 projects for refrigeration, greening and cooling in all 23 districts and created 243,000 square meters of new or redesigned parks and green spaces.

European perspective of the renaturation

The European Union is working on a new law to restore nature in parallel to the Viennese initiatives. This [EU Renaturierungsgesetz] (https://www.europarl.europa.eu/de/press-rooom/20223ipr18078/Parlament-ja-zur-renaturierung-von-der-und-meeresflachen-der-eu until 2030. In addition, it is required that at least 30% of the habitats concerned must be moved in good condition. The implementation of these measures is essential for the achievement of the EU's climate and species protection goals, as well as to ensure nutritional security.

The federal government has called on the federal government and the members of the European Parliament to work for the EU Renaturation Act and formulates clear requirements in order to increase the liability and efficiency of this measure. This also includes better protective measures for moor and agricultural landscapes as well as a sustainable fishing policy.

With these comprehensive measures at both urban and European level, there is a strong commitment to climate protection and the preservation of nature. Vienna's successes and initiatives could serve as a model for other cities and regions to also make significant progress in environmental protection.
