Injustices in the system: increase in network fees by 23% by 2025

The increasing network tariffs for electricity and gas in 2025 cause resentment among households and companies. According to the draft of the system usage fee regulation, network tariffs will increase on average by 23 percent, which means around 70 euros in additional costs per year for average consumption of 3,500 kilowatt hours. These developments go back to the need for massive investments in the management expansion in order to prepare the network for the decentralized power supply with renewable energies such as wind and solar power.

The Chamber of Labor warns of a possible doubling of network costs by 2030 if no legal measures are taken. The E-Control board member Wolfgang Urbantschitsch therefore urgently demands regulation of network fees. Currently private households in particular bear a large part of the network costs, although they only have a small proportion of electricity consumption.

The increasing spread of photovoltaic systems leads to an additional problem because the electricity withdrawal decreases from the public network. Therefore, consumers have to compensate for the savings of others without their own solar systems. Urbantschitsch sees growing injustice in the system, especially with the increasing use of electric cars and heat pumps.

It is discussed to align the network tariffs more on the loads of the network by lace loads instead of only sitting after annual quantities. The demand for more storage capacity and flexibility in dealing with surplus current and electric vehicles is also supported by the Chamber of Labor.

Overall, big changes are imminent in the energy sector in order to make the network fit for the future and to create fairer tariff structures.
