Delivery bottleneck for RSV vaccine for infants-the chamber of pharmacists denies two-class society

In Vorarlberg, the RSV vaccine for infants and toddlers is currently scarce. According to Christof van Dellen, the President of the Vorarlberg Pharmacist Chamber of Pharmacists, this is a problem that not only affects Vorarlberg, but occurs across Europe. All over Austria and even throughout Europe, the procurement of the RSV vaccine is difficult. Germany has already added this vaccination to the free vaccination program, but there are currently not enough stocks available there either.

van Dellen makes it clear that this bottleneck is not a two-class society, but simply a replenishment problem. The Vorarlberg Medical Association confirms this fact and states that there is currently far too little vaccine for infants and toddlers. The supplies are limited and a broad access to vaccination is currently not possible.

It remains uncertain how long this delivery job will last. Neither pharmacies nor the pharmacy wholesale can provide reliable information. While the RSV vaccine is scarce for toddlers, according to Van Dellen there are no problems with the availability of the vaccine for adults. There are sufficient stocks.

The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is transferred from person to person, mainly through droplets infection. The disease shows unspecific symptoms and mainly affects the respiratory tract. The virus is particularly dangerous for infants, toddlers and older people. It can lead to serious complications, especially for people with certain previous illnesses.
