In 2024, a total of 24,941 people in Austria submitted asylum applications, which represents a significant decline compared to the 112,272 applications in 2022. This emerges from the asylum statistics of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Despite this decline, however, the number remains higher than in 2018 to 2020. It is noticeable that 41 % of the applications are so -called original asylum applications, i.e. from people who have returned. Asylum seekers from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey are particularly represented, which according to the data for the asylum applications in Austria.

In Vorarlberg, 61 % of the refugees of Syrian origin are, 14 % come from Afghanistan and 10 % from Somalia. Many of these people have a low level of education, whereby almost half can only read and write inadequately in their mother tongue. This initial situation significantly complicates the learning of the German language, which is why 30 % of the German exams were repetitions, as reported. In the case of asylum applications, the quota of positive decisions in 2024 among Syrian nationals with impressive 70 % and for Afghan citizens at 61 %, which indicates a general opportunity to find protection in Austria.
