Ried celebrates championship title: Dramatic promotion party despite injuries!

On May 25, 2025, the players and fans of SV Ried celebrated a historic moment when they received the 2nd league championship trophy after a dramatic season finale. The championship title was secured after a 1-1 draw against Vienna, which came despite numerous injuries to the team, including Ante Bajic, Philipp Pomer, Wilfried Eza and David Bumberger. Only ten players were available to the coach during the first half, as the rule of a maximum of three changes per half required this. Nevertheless, the decisive goal came from Michael Sollbauer in the 60th minute, followed by a late equalizer from Bernhard Luxbacher in the 88th minute.

The backdrop was magnificent: over 7,100 fans gathered in the stadium to celebrate their team. The stadium gates opened at 7:30 p.m. and the cheering supporters enthusiastically stormed the pitch. Christian Ebenbauer, chairman of the Bundesliga, ceremoniously presented the trophy. In this festive atmosphere, captain Andreas Leitner was honored as “Goalkeeper of the Season” and Mark Giovanni Grosse as “Player of the Season”. Among the prominent guests were LASK fan Markus Achleitner and the governor of Upper Austria, Thomas Stelzer. Ried city boss Bernhard Zwielehner expressed himself positively about the Bundesliga, which now includes three Upper Austrian clubs.

Return to the Bundesliga

Promotion to the top Austrian football league, which has been known as the ADMIRAL Bundesliga since the 2021/22 season, marks a significant turning point for Ried. The team returns after the last season in 2022/23, where they played under coach Maximilian Senft. With an impressive 4-1 away win against Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz, Ried secured the championship title in the penultimate round of the season. At the same time, the pursuers Admira were no longer able to catch up after a defeat against FC Liefering, which finally sealed Rieder's promotion.

The Austrian Bundesliga, founded in 1991 and renamed several times since then, has a long and eventful history marked by political and social changes in Austria. The league, which consists of 12 teams, is known for its high attendance and distribution of qualifying places for European competitions. SK Sturm Graz currently holds the title of champions and is being challenged by many teams, while some clubs have run into financial difficulties.

The traditional league remains a central part of Austrian sport, and Ried's successful return shows that competition in the Bundesliga remains lively. Fans and players are looking forward to the challenges that next season will bring in the top division.
