Convention in Austria increases: violence and theft at a record level!
In 2024, Austria experienced an increase in the final convicts. A total of 27,717 convictions were issued, which corresponds to an increase of 1.6 percent compared to the previous year. This development continues a trend that has been observed in 2020 since the pandeme -related low point. The average conviction per person is 1.09, while an average of 1.66 offenses were found per conviction. These figures come from the [Statistics Austria] (https://www.statistics.at/statistiken/bevoelkung-und--s-undiales/kriminalitaet-undicherheit/verupründungs- und Wiederverjuition statistics), which documented the situation in the Austrian crime landscape.
An interesting development is shown in terms of the re -judgment rate, which increase to 30.9 percent in 2024. This is the first increase since 2018 and particularly affects a cohort of people who were first convicted in 2020 or were released from the enforcement. Almost every third convicted person has been convicted within four years, which indicates a worrying continuity in crime.
distribution of the convictions
The convictions show a clear distribution according to types of offenses. 32 percent of the convictions concerned crimes against foreign assets, while 18.5 percent were on violent offenses against life and life. The increase in convictions because of (attempted) murder, which increased by 21.1 percent, is particularly alarming. There was also a significant increase of 23.8 percent with severe robbery. In contrast, the area of convicts according to the Foreign Police Act recorded a decline of 34.2 percent and for corruption offenses that decreased by 31.1 percent.
A look at the demographic composition of the convict shows that 84.5 percent were male and 85.6 percent over 20 years old. The proportion of young people between the ages of 14 and 17 was 6.1 percent, which is a slight increase compared to 2023. In contrast, the proportion of young adults between the ages of 18 and 20 years fell from 13.1 percent in 2012 to now 8.4 percent
overall development of crime
The total number of offenses increased by 3.6 percent, which illustrates the growing tendency that has been observed since recent years. The judicial crime statistics based on the Criminal Code shows that these developments cannot be viewed in isolation. They are in the context of a social debate about security and crime in Austria. The [Kleine Zeitung] (https://www.kleinezeitung.at/oesterreich/19755819/morde-und-zeuchte-murde-im- Herbst-Jahr-Stark-Eachen reports the increased numbers of murders and attempted murders and emphasizes the importance of a public discussion about such trends.
In summary, it can be seen that the crime rates in Austria, influenced by many factors, continue to represent a critical topic. The authorities face the challenge of adequately countering these developments and ensuring the security of citizens. It remains to be seen how these tendencies will develop in the coming years.Details | |
