Traffic noise affects millions: heart attacks and strokes threaten!
The Verkehrsclub Austria (VCÖ) urgently warns of the health consequences of traffic noise, which is the most common noise pollution in Austria. According to the VCÖ, around 34% of the population from the age of 16, i.e. around 2.57 million people. It is particularly alarming that 84% of those affected indicate car traffic as the main cause, followed by 10% for air traffic and 6% by rail and tram noise. This permanent noise pollution can cause serious health problems such as sleep disorders, increased blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes. The VCÖ sees an urgent need for action.
Permanent noise pollution require a strategic approach. The VCÖ recommends measures such as lower speed limits, traffic calming and the promotion of environmentally friendly transport, including walking and cycling. A reduction of the speed from 50 to 30 km/h is considered effective because it feels halved. An adaptation of the speed limits on open -air roads, highways and expressways could also lead to a noticeable noise reduction.
measures for noise protection
In addition to the lowering of speed limits, there are a variety of measures that can contribute to reducing traffic noise. According to healthy.bund.de, this includes the introduction of more speed 30 zones and rest areas in urban areas as well as the use of soundproofing walls. The development of quieter tire materials for cars and motorcycles also plays an important role in the fight against noise.
The expansion of electromobility and the promotion of environmentally friendly transport such as bicycles are also essential steps that not only reduce traffic noise, but also contribute to improving air quality. To this end, the VCÖ calls the population to mark problem areas when cycling on an online card until 4. May to report them to the responsible authorities.
individual noise protection
In addition, there is also the possibility of individual noise protection measures. In the event of loud activities, such as mowing lawns or at concerts, healthy.bund.de recommends the use of hearing protection. Even at night, earplugs can promote a quiet sleeping environment. Mindfulness in the area is also important to recognize whether noises are perceived as disturbing and, if necessary, to cause changes. This includes, for example, to minimize the quiet places of music or the impairment by ticking watches or refrigerators.
To manage the noise better, it is advisable to visit quiet places. Low noise backdrops can often be found in smaller streets, parks or during walks in nature. The VCÖ and 5min.at emphasize the urgency to take these measures seriously in order to improve the quality of life of the residents and to protect their health.
